DDR5 price tracker: what a kit costs in 2026

Tracker· Updated October 7, 2026

DDR5 is the generation almost every current build needs, and the one that absorbed the full force of the AI memory shortage. This page tracks what a kit costs per capacity and per gigabyte, where the chip market underneath it sits, and whether waiting is worth it.

How much does a 32GB DDR5 kit cost right now?

A 32GB DDR5 kit costs about $456 to $590 in the US as of October 7, 2026, roughly $14.25 to $18.44 per gigabyte. Across all capacities DDR5 averages $17.50 per GB, against $7.77 for DDR4. The 64GB tier is the best value per gigabyte at $20.30, and 16GB is the worst. TrendForce reported DDR5 spot prices up 307% between September and November 2025, and no forecaster on record expects meaningful relief before late 2027.

What is the DDR5 price forecast for 2026 and 2027?

DDR5 prices are forecast to keep rising through the end of 2026, more slowly than in the first half, and no published forecast has them falling in 2027. TrendForce has conventional DRAM contract increases shrinking from 93 to 98% quarter on quarter in 1Q26 to 13 to 18% in 3Q26, and its September 30 2026 outlook adds another 10 to 15% in 4Q26. Most new capacity lands in 2028 or later: the first cleanroom from the August 2026 memory capex wave opens in December 2028. As of October 1 2026, the verdict is: buy the DDR5 you need now, and only wait if the purchase can slip to 2028.

Contract percentages are what memory makers charge device and module makers each quarter, not the retail price of a kit, but retail follows them with a lag. DDR5 cost per gigabyte, by capacity

The per-gigabyte view is the one that tells you what to buy. In a normal market this ladder slopes the other way: bigger modules cost more per gigabyte because density carries a premium. In this shortage the smaller parts got squeezed hardest, so the 64GB tier is the best value per gigabyte and 16GB is the worst. If you were planning a 2x16GB kit, price the 2x32GB before you commit.

DDR5 retail prices by capacity

Aggregated retail prices, not spot or contract. Two independent retail trackers disagree on the level, so every row is a range rather than a single price: RAM Prices USA reads Amazon listings only, DropReference tracks a wider basket of DDR5 kits across multiple retailers. Kit prices at the range edges are derived from the published per-GB figure where a tracker publishes per-GB rather than per-kit. Treat the low end as a good price to hunt for and the high end as what a typical listing asks.

DDR5 prices: frequently asked questions

How much does a 32GB DDR5 kit cost right now?
About $456 to $590, or $14.25 to $18.44 per GB, as of October 7, 2026. Two independent retail trackers disagree by roughly 50% because they read different baskets, so the low end is a good price worth hunting for and the high end is what a typical listing asks. Before the shortage the same kit was near $95.
Which DDR5 capacity is the best value per GB?
The 64GB tier, at about $20.30 per GB, against $18.50 for 16GB. That ordering is unusual: normally the biggest modules carry a density premium. In a shortage the small legacy-adjacent parts get squeezed hardest, so the per-GB curve has flattened and partly inverted. If you were planning 2x16GB, price the 2x32GB kit before deciding.
Did DDR5 prices really rise 307%?
That figure is TrendForce's DDR5 spot price increase between September and November 2025, published in its Memory Spot Price Update series. It describes the open-market chip spot price over about ten weeks, not the retail price of a finished kit over the whole shortage. Retail kits rose roughly four to five times from mid-2025 to mid-2026, which is a different measurement over a longer window. Both numbers are real and they are not the same number.
Should I buy DDR5 now or wait?
Buy now if you need it. TrendForce expects DRAM contract prices to keep rising through 2026, Gartner sees no meaningful relief before late 2027, and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan says the industry told him nothing improves until 2028. If your build can take DDR4 instead, that is the one genuine way to spend materially less today.
Is a faster DDR5 speed grade worth paying for right now?
Less than usual. What repriced in this shortage is capacity, not speed: the per-gigabyte cost is what multiplied, while the premium for a higher speed grade over a mainstream one is roughly what it always was. On a fixed budget, dropping one capacity tier saves far more than dropping a speed grade, so buy the mainstream speed at the capacity you actually need.

Where this fits

This page is a spoke off the RAM price index and DRAM price tracker, which carries the buy-or-wait verdict table, the spot-versus-inflation divergence chart, and the full method note. The sibling trackers are ddr4 prices, hbm prices, server ram prices and ram price chart.

For the analysis behind the numbers: why RAM is so expensive in 2026 argues the squeeze is a deliberate business choice, the 2026 RAM price forecast maps what each forecaster expects, how to save money on RAM in 2026 is the tactical version, and what CXMT is covers the one supply-side force large enough to eventually push prices down.
